Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the process of photosynthesis and conduct a hands-on lab to observe the factors that affect plant growth.

Materials and Prep

Materials:

  • Several potted plants
  • Watering can
  • Measuring tape
  • Soil
  • Light source (lamp or sunlight)
  • Plastic bags
  • Scissors
  • Marker

Prep:

  • Set up a designated area for the plants to be placed for the experiment
  • Ensure each plant has equal access to light and water
  • Label the plants for identification

Activities

1. Measure the initial height of each plant and record it in a notebook.

2. Place a plastic bag over one of the plants to simulate a greenhouse effect and observe its growth over time.

3. Water one plant more frequently than the others and observe the differences in growth.

4. Place one plant in a dark area and observe its growth compared to the others.

Tenth Grade Talking Points

  • Plants use a process called photosynthesis to convert light energy into chemical energy. This is essential for their growth and survival. As you conduct the experiment, explain, "Plants use sunlight to make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. This is why they need light to grow and thrive."
  • Factors such as water, light, and temperature can affect plant growth. When discussing the different conditions for each plant in the experiment, mention, "Plants require water, light, and suitable temperatures to grow. By altering these factors, we can observe how they impact plant growth."
  • Observing and recording data is an important part of scientific experimentation. Encourage the student to carefully observe and record the changes in the plants over time. Explain, "Recording data allows us to analyze and understand the effects of different conditions on plant growth."
