Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to analyze and interpret photographs as a form of visual storytelling, and understand how photography can enhance their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.

Materials and Prep

  • A selection of photographs from different genres and time periods
  • Access to a computer or tablet for online research
  • Writing materials
  • Prior knowledge of basic photography concepts and techniques

Activities

  1. Introduction to Visual Storytelling: Discuss with the student the concept of visual storytelling and how photographs can convey narratives and emotions.
  2. Photo Analysis: Provide the student with a set of photographs and ask them to choose one that catches their attention. Instruct them to analyze the chosen photograph by describing the subject, composition, lighting, and mood. Encourage them to think about the story or message the photograph might be conveying.
  3. Research and Interpretation: Ask the student to research the photographer of their chosen photograph and the context in which it was taken. Have them write a short paragraph interpreting the photograph based on their research and analysis.
  4. Comparison and Contrast: Provide the student with another photograph, preferably from a different genre or time period. Instruct them to compare and contrast this photograph with the one they analyzed earlier. Have them write a paragraph discussing the similarities and differences in terms of subject matter, composition, and overall impact.
  5. Reflection and Discussion: Engage in a conversation with the student about the significance of photography in enhancing reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. Encourage them to reflect on how analyzing photographs can help them develop a deeper understanding of visual texts and expand their ability to interpret and appreciate different forms of art.
