Franklin's Fun Reading Time!

Welcome to a special reading adventure with our friend, Franklin the Turtle!

Materials Needed:

  • A Franklin the Turtle book
  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Optional: Turtle puppet or stuffed animal

Let's Get Started! (5 minutes)

Ask your student: "Do you know who Franklin the Turtle is? What do you like about him?" Look at the cover of the book together. "What do you think this story might be about? What clues does the cover give us?"

Story Time! (10-15 minutes)

Read the chosen Franklin book aloud with lots of expression! Point to the pictures as you read. If you have a turtle puppet, you can use it to 'help' read Franklin's parts. Pause occasionally to ask simple questions like, "What is Franklin doing now?" or "How do you think Franklin feels here?"

Chat About the Story (5-10 minutes)

After reading, let's talk about it!

  • "Who was the main character in our story?" (Franklin!)
  • "What was the most exciting part?"
  • "Can you remember what happened first in the story? What happened next? And at the end?" (Help sequence the main events)
  • "How did Franklin feel at the beginning of the story? How did his feelings change? Why?" (Focus on identifying emotions like happy, sad, scared, worried, brave)

Creative Fun! (10 minutes)

Let's draw! Ask your student to draw their favorite part of the story, or draw Franklin showing one of the feelings he had in the book. While they draw, talk about their picture: "Tell me about what you're drawing! Why was that your favorite part?"

Wrap Up (2-3 minutes)

Review what happened in the story one more time. Praise your student's participation and drawing. "You did a great job reading and talking about Franklin today! Franklin would be very proud!"
