Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and count different denominations of coins and understand their value.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Assorted coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters)
Prep: Familiarize yourself with the value of each coin and have them ready for the activities.
Activities
1. Coin Sorting: Have the student sort the coins into different piles based on their denominations (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters).
2. Coin Value Game: Show the student a coin and ask them to identify its value. If they get it right, they get to keep the coin. If not, it goes back in the pile.
3. Money Math: Create simple addition and subtraction problems using the coins. For example, ask the student to count 3 nickels and 2 dimes, then tell you the total value.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Coins are small, round pieces of metal that we use to buy things. Each coin has a different value."
- "Pennies are worth 1 cent, nickels are worth 5 cents, dimes are worth 10 cents, and quarters are worth 25 cents."
- "When we have a lot of pennies, we can exchange them for other coins that are worth more, like nickels, dimes, and quarters."
