Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills while playing Minecraft, including addition, subtraction, and multiplication.
Materials and Prep
Materials: A computer or tablet with Minecraft installed
Prep: Make sure you have access to a Minecraft world where you can build and explore.
Activities
1. Addition Adventure: Explore your Minecraft world and count the number of blocks you collect. Add them up to see how many you have in total.
2. Subtraction Challenge: Create a structure in Minecraft using blocks, then remove a certain number of blocks. Calculate how many blocks are left after the subtraction.
3. Multiplication Masterpiece: Build a house using a specific pattern of blocks, then calculate how many blocks you would need if you wanted to build multiple houses with the same pattern.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "In Minecraft, we can use math to count the blocks we collect and build with."
- "When we remove blocks from our structure, we can use subtraction to find out how many are left."
- "If we want to build multiple structures with the same pattern, we can use multiplication to figure out how many blocks we need."
