Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts using blocks.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Blocks of different shapes and sizes
Prep: None
Activities
1. Sorting Blocks: Sort the blocks by color, shape, and size. Count and record how many of each type you have.
2. Building with Blocks: Use the blocks to build different structures. Add, subtract, and count the number of blocks used for each structure.
3. Block Patterns: Create patterns using the blocks. Describe the patterns using numbers and colors.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Let's start by sorting the blocks. Can you count how many red blocks there are?"
- "Now, let's use the blocks to build a tall tower. How many blocks did you use in total?"
- "Can you create a pattern using the blue and yellow blocks? Describe the pattern using numbers and colors."
