Krabby Patty Decimals: Adding and Subtracting with Spongebob!

Materials Needed:

  • Whiteboard or large paper
  • Dry-erase markers or regular markers
  • Paper and pencil for the student
  • "Krabby Patty Price List" worksheet (Teacher-created: list items like Krabby Patty, Kelp Fries, Coral Bits with decimal prices like $2.75, $1.50, $0.95)
  • "Bikini Bottom Shopping Spree" worksheet (Teacher-created: word problems involving adding and subtracting the menu prices)
  • Optional: Spongebob character figures or pictures
  • Optional: Play money (dollars, dimes, pennies)

Lesson Procedure:

1. Introduction: Welcome to the Krusty Krab! (5 minutes)

  • Engage the student: "Guess what? Today, we're heading underwater to Bikini Bottom! Mr. Krabs needs our help at the Krusty Krab with some money math. Are you ready?"
  • Review Place Value: Briefly review tenths and hundredths using place value charts or visual aids. Connect pennies to hundredths ($0.01) and dimes to tenths ($0.10) of a dollar.

2. Activity 1: Krabby Patty Price Check (15 minutes)

  • Introduce the "Krabby Patty Price List".
  • "Spongebob needs to add up orders. Let's help him! If Patrick orders a Krabby Patty ($2.75) and Kelp Fries ($1.50), how much does it cost?"
  • Model lining up the decimals vertically on the whiteboard. Emphasize adding digits in the same place value, starting from the right (hundredths).
  • Work through 2-3 examples together, like Sandy ordering Coral Bits and a Krabby Patty.
  • Have the student practice 2-3 addition problems independently using the price list. Use play money to visualize if helpful.

3. Activity 2: Giving Change with Squidward (15 minutes)

  • "Oh no! Squidward needs to give change. Plankton paid $5.00 for Kelp Fries ($1.50). How much change does he get back?"
  • Model lining up the decimals for subtraction. Emphasize borrowing if needed, just like with whole numbers. Remind the student to add a decimal and zeros ($5.00) if subtracting from a whole dollar amount.
  • Work through 2-3 examples together, like paying $10.00 for a $4.25 order.
  • Have the student practice 2-3 subtraction problems independently.

4. Activity 3: Bikini Bottom Shopping Spree (15 minutes)

  • Introduce the "Bikini Bottom Shopping Spree" worksheet with word problems.
  • Read the problems aloud. Examples: "Spongebob bought ingredients costing $12.45. He paid with a $20.00 bill. How much change did he get?" or "Mrs. Puff bought a Krabby Patty ($2.75) and two Coral Bits ($0.95 each). What was her total bill?"
  • Guide the student in identifying whether to add or subtract and setting up the problems.
  • Allow the student to work through the problems, offering support as needed.

5. Conclusion: You're a Krusty Krew Math Whiz! (5 minutes)

  • Review the learning objectives. Ask the student: "What's the most important thing to remember when adding or subtracting decimals?" (Answer: Lining up the decimal points!)
  • Praise the student's effort and success. Maybe offer a Spongebob-themed sticker or small reward.
  • Optional Extension: Create more complex orders or multi-step problems.
