Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use addition and subtraction to solve problems related to building with Legos.

Materials and Prep

You will need a set of Legos and a flat surface to build on. Make sure you have a clear space to work and have your Legos sorted by color and size.

Activities

1. Build and Count: Use your Legos to build a simple structure, then count how many Legos you used for the construction. Write down the number.

2. Addition Fun: Build two small structures with Legos. Count the number of Legos used for each structure, then add the two numbers together.

3. Subtraction Challenge: Build a larger structure with Legos. Count the total number of Legos used. Now, remove some Legos and count how many are left. Use subtraction to find out how many Legos you removed.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "When we count the Legos we used to build, we are practicing addition and counting skills."
  • "Adding two numbers together means putting them together to find the total."
  • "Subtraction is when we take away some Legos from our structure and find out how many are left."
  • "When we build with Legos, we are using math to create something fun and interesting!"
