Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts through fun princess and castle themed activities.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Paper, pencil, crayons, and a toy castle or princess figurine.
Prep: None
Activities
1. Princess Addition: Draw a castle and princesses on a piece of paper. Use the princesses to act out addition problems. For example, if there are 2 princesses in the castle and 1 more arrives, how many princesses are there in total?
2. Castle Subtraction: Draw a big castle and color it with crayons. Then, pretend that some princesses leave the castle and ask the student to subtract the number of princesses that left from the total number in the castle.
Transitional-Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Princesses love to live in castles, just like we love to live in our homes. Let's count how many princesses are in the castle together."
- "When a new princess arrives at the castle, we can add her to the group. Let's count how many princesses are in the castle now."
- "Oh no! Some princesses are leaving the castle. Let's figure out how many princesses are still inside the castle after some have left."
