Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts through a fun and engaging activity related to cars.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Toy cars, paper, markers
Prep: None
Activities
1. Counting Cars: Have the student line up their toy cars and count them out loud. Encourage them to touch each car as they count.
2. Car Race Addition: Draw a simple race track on paper and place a number of cars at the starting line. Ask the student to add the number of cars in different scenarios (e.g., "If we add 2 more cars to the race, how many cars will there be in total?").
3. Car Color Subtraction: Using the toy cars, ask the student to pick a certain color of cars and then subtract a specific number of cars from the group. For example, "If we have 5 red cars and we take away 2, how many red cars are left?"
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Let's count the cars together. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5! We have 5 cars!"
- "Now, let's imagine the cars are racing. If we add 2 more cars to the race, how many cars will there be in total?"
- "Can you show me 3 blue cars? Great! Now, if we take away 1 blue car, how many blue cars are left?"
