Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concept of atoms and their importance in chemistry.
Materials and Prep
Materials:
- Colored paper
- Scissors
- Glue
Prep:
- Prepare cut-out shapes of circles, squares, and triangles from the colored paper.
Activities
1. Atom Craft:
- Give the student the cut-out shapes and explain that atoms are like building blocks of everything around us.
- Ask the student to use the shapes to create their own "atom" by gluing the shapes together.
2. Atom Dance:
- Explain that atoms are constantly in motion, just like in a dance.
- Encourage the student to move around and pretend to be atoms dancing around.
First Grade Talking Points
- Atoms are tiny building blocks that make up everything around us. You can think of them like Lego pieces that join together to make different things.
- Just like how we can make different things by joining Lego pieces, atoms can join together to make different materials like water, air, and even the chair you're sitting on.
