Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concept of atoms and their importance in chemistry.

Materials and Prep

Materials:

  • Colored paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Prep:

  • Prepare cut-out shapes of circles, squares, and triangles from the colored paper.

Activities

1. Atom Craft:

  • Give the student the cut-out shapes and explain that atoms are like building blocks of everything around us.
  • Ask the student to use the shapes to create their own "atom" by gluing the shapes together.

2. Atom Dance:

  • Explain that atoms are constantly in motion, just like in a dance.
  • Encourage the student to move around and pretend to be atoms dancing around.

First Grade Talking Points

  • Atoms are tiny building blocks that make up everything around us. You can think of them like Lego pieces that join together to make different things.
  • Just like how we can make different things by joining Lego pieces, atoms can join together to make different materials like water, air, and even the chair you're sitting on.
