Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic structure of atoms and how they form molecules.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Paper, pencil, and colored markers.
Prep: None
Activities
Create an Atom: Draw a circle to represent the nucleus and add protons and neutrons inside. Then draw electrons orbiting around the nucleus.
Build a Molecule: Draw two or more atoms and connect them with lines to represent chemical bonds.
Atomic Model Dance: Pretend to be protons, neutrons, and electrons and dance around to show how they move within an atom.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
"Atoms are the tiny building blocks of everything around us. They are made up of even smaller particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons."
"The nucleus of an atom is like the center, and it contains the protons and neutrons. The electrons move around the nucleus in specific paths called energy levels."
"When atoms join together, they form molecules. It's like when friends hold hands to make a chain. The bonds between atoms hold them together in a molecule."
