Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic structure of atoms and how they form molecules.

Materials and Prep

Materials: Paper, pencil, and colored markers.

Prep: None

Activities

  • Create an Atom: Draw a circle to represent the nucleus and add protons and neutrons inside. Then draw electrons orbiting around the nucleus.

  • Build a Molecule: Draw two or more atoms and connect them with lines to represent chemical bonds.

  • Atomic Model Dance: Pretend to be protons, neutrons, and electrons and dance around to show how they move within an atom.

Fifth Grade Talking Points

  • "Atoms are the tiny building blocks of everything around us. They are made up of even smaller particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons."

  • "The nucleus of an atom is like the center, and it contains the protons and neutrons. The electrons move around the nucleus in specific paths called energy levels."

  • "When atoms join together, they form molecules. It's like when friends hold hands to make a chain. The bonds between atoms hold them together in a molecule."
