By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand how people lived in the past during autumn and how their activities changed with the season.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Paper, crayons, and access to outdoor space (if available).
Prep: Familiarize yourself with the concept of seasonal changes and how it affected people's lives in the past.
Activities
1. Drawing: Have the student draw a picture of what they think a historic autumn scene might look like. Encourage them to include people and activities they think might have taken place.
2. Outdoor Exploration: If possible, take a walk outside and observe the changes in nature during autumn. Discuss how these changes might have impacted people in the past.
3. Storytelling: Read or tell a story about a historical autumn event or tradition, and discuss how it relates to the student's drawing and observations.
First Grade Talking Points
- "In the past, people lived differently during autumn than they do now. They had different activities and traditions because they didn't have the same things we have today."
- "During autumn, the leaves change colors and fall from the trees. People in the past used these leaves for different things, like making decorations or using them to help their gardens grow."
- "Some people in the past celebrated autumn with special events, like harvest festivals. They would come together to share food, music, and games."
