Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic addition and subtraction concepts through fun butterfly-themed activities.

Materials and Prep

Materials:

  • Butterfly cutouts
  • Markers or crayons
  • Paper
  • Counting objects (e.g., buttons, beads, or small toys)

Preparation:

  • Cut out butterfly shapes from paper
  • Prepare the counting objects for the activities

Activities

1. Butterfly Addition: Have the student color and decorate the butterfly cutouts. Then, ask them to count and write the number of decorations on each butterfly. Finally, ask them to add the numbers together to find the total decorations on all the butterflies.

2. Butterfly Subtraction: Place a certain number of counting objects on a table. Let the student count and write down the initial number. Then, ask them to remove some objects and write down the new number. Help them understand that the difference between the two numbers represents subtraction.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Let's count the pretty colors on the butterfly wings together. How many colors can you see?"
  • "Now, let's add the number of colors on this butterfly to the number of colors on that butterfly. What is the total?"
  • "Look at the objects on the table. Can you tell me how many there are? Great! Now, if we take some away, how many will be left?"
