Princess Story Time Adventure
Materials Needed:
- A favorite princess picture book (e.g., Cinderella, Rapunzel, The Paper Bag Princess, or any book featuring a princess)
- Construction paper
- Crayons or markers
- Optional: Princess dress-up clothes or accessories
- Optional: Craft supplies for a simple wand (stick/straw, paper star, glitter glue/stickers)
Lesson Procedure:
1. Introduction: The Royal Invitation (5 minutes)
- Start by talking about princesses. Ask: "What do you know about princesses? What do they do?"
- Optional: If using dress-up clothes, invite the student to put on a crown or dress to get into character.
- Introduce the chosen princess book. "Today, we have a special invitation to read a story about a princess named [Princess's Name]! Let's find out what adventures she has." Show the cover and ask Predictions: "What do you think might happen in this story?"
2. Guided Reading: The Story Unfolds (10-15 minutes)
- Read the story aloud with expression. Point to the pictures as you read.
- Pause occasionally to ask simple questions related to the pictures or text: "Who is this?" (pointing to the princess or another main character), "What is happening here?", "How do you think the princess feels right now?"
- Define any new vocabulary words simply.
3. Comprehension Check: Royal Recall (5-10 minutes)
- After finishing the story, ask recall questions:
- "Who was the main princess in our story?"
- "Can you tell me one important thing that happened to the princess?"
- "What happened next?" or "What happened at the very end of the story?"
- "Did you like the story? Why or why not?"
4. Creative Activity: Draw the Magic (10 minutes)
- Provide construction paper and crayons/markers.
- Ask the student: "Can you draw your favorite part of the story? Or maybe draw the princess herself?"
- While drawing, talk about their picture. "Tell me about what you are drawing." Encourage them to use details mentioned in the story.
5. Optional Extension: Craft a Royal Wand (10 minutes)
- If time and interest permit, create a simple wand. Help the student cut out a star shape (or provide a pre-cut one).
- Decorate the star with glitter glue or stickers.
- Attach the star to a stick, straw, or rolled paper tube.
- They can use their wand to pretend to be the princess from the story or make magical wishes related to the story.
6. Conclusion: A Happy Ending (3-5 minutes)
- Review the main character (the princess) and one or two key events discussed earlier.
- Look at the student's drawing together and praise their effort and recall.
- Conclude by saying something like, "That was a wonderful story adventure! You did a great job listening and remembering what happened to Princess [Princess's Name]."
