Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to perform basic arithmetic operations and solve problems using unicorn-themed math activities.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Paper, pencils
Prep: Familiarize yourself with basic addition and subtraction.
Activities
1. Unicorn Addition: Draw 5 unicorns on a piece of paper and write a number between 1-10 under each unicorn. Add the numbers together.
2. Subtraction Story Problems: Create a story about unicorns and use it to create subtraction problems. For example, "If there were 8 unicorns and 3 flew away, how many are left?"
3. Unicorn Counting: Draw a magical forest with unicorns and ask the student to count how many unicorns are in the picture.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Let's pretend we have 3 unicorns and we find 2 more. How many unicorns do we have altogether?"
- "When we take away 1 unicorn from a group of 5, how many unicorns are left?"
- "Imagine a magical land with 7 unicorns. If 4 unicorns go to play, how many are still in the land?"
