Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of chemistry in the context of forests and their natural elements.

Materials and Prep

Materials:

  • Water
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Small cups or containers
  • Small sticks or leaves from the forest (ensure adult supervision and permission)

Prep:

  • Collect small sticks or leaves from the forest for the experiment.
  • Set up the materials in a safe and accessible area for the activities.

Activities

1. Forest Potion Experiment:
Mix water, baking soda, and a few drops of food coloring (if using) in a cup. Add a small stick or leaf and observe what happens. Then, add vinegar to see the reaction. Discuss with an adult what happened and why.

2. Nature Scavenger Hunt:
Take a walk in the forest and look for different elements such as rocks, soil, leaves, and water. Observe and discuss the different textures, colors, and smells of these elements.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • Plants and trees are part of the forest. They need water to live and grow. You can say, "Plants and trees need water to drink, just like us!"
  • When we mix baking soda and vinegar, it makes bubbles. This is a chemical reaction. You can say, "Wow, look at the bubbles! That's the baking soda and vinegar making something new!"
  • When we go for a walk in the forest, we can find different things like leaves, rocks, and soil. Let's touch and feel them. You can say, "I found a smooth rock! It feels cool in my hand."
