Materials and Prep
Materials:
- Whiteboard or paper
- Markers or colored pencils
Prep:
- Prepare a list of simple words with vowels
- Have the whiteboard or paper ready for writing and drawing
Activities
1. Vowel Hunt:
Write a few words on the whiteboard or paper and ask the student to identify the vowels in each word. Encourage them to circle the vowels with different colors to make it fun and engaging.
2. Vowel Art:
Ask the student to draw a picture of an object or animal, and then write its name next to the drawing. Have them identify and circle the vowels in the word they wrote.
3. Vowel Song:
Create a simple song using the vowels and sing it together. For example, "A, E, I, O, U, are the vowels we love, yes it's true!"
First Grade Talking Points
- "Vowels are special letters that make different sounds in words. They are the letters a, e, i, o, and u."
- "When we see a word, we can look for these special letters to find the vowels."
- "Sometimes vowels can be short and make a quick sound, like in the word 'cat'. Other times, they can be long and say their own name, like in the word 'cake'."
- "We can have fun finding and circling the vowels in words to help us remember them better."
