Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe basic shapes and work together to create simple geometric patterns.

Materials and Prep

Materials: Construction paper, scissors, glue, and markers. Prep: Familiarize yourself with basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, and rectangle).

Activities

1. Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around your house or yard. Find and name different shapes you see. Work together to identify as many shapes as you can.

2. Shape Collage: Cut out different shapes from construction paper and work together to create a collaborative shape collage. Discuss how the shapes fit together and encourage cooperation in arranging them.

3. Pattern Play: Use the shapes to create simple patterns, such as circle-square-circle-square, and take turns adding to the pattern. Encourage teamwork and cooperation in creating the patterns.

Preschool Grade Talking Points

  • "Let's find shapes around us! Can you find a circle like a clock or a square like a window?"
  • "Now, let's work together to make a shape collage. How about we put the triangles next to the squares?"
  • "We're making a pattern with shapes. Can you help me continue the pattern? Circle, square, circle, square."
