Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using toy cars.
Materials and Prep
- Toy cars
- Counting objects (e.g., small blocks, buttons)
- Pen or pencil
Before starting the lesson, make sure your child is familiar with counting numbers from 1 to 10.
Activities
-
Counting Cars
Ask your child to line up the toy cars in a row. Then, ask them to count the cars out loud. Encourage them to touch each car as they count.
-
Addition Race
Place two groups of cars in front of your child. Ask them to count the cars in each group and then tell you the total number of cars by adding the two groups together.
-
Subtraction Challenge
Give your child a specific number of cars and ask them to imagine that some cars have driven away. Ask them how many cars are left. For example, if they have 5 cars and you say 2 cars drove away, they should answer 3 cars left.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun with toy cars while practicing our math skills."
- "Let's count the cars together. Start with 1 and count all the way up to the last car."
- "Can you tell me how many cars are there in total if we have 3 cars in one group and 4 cars in another group? Let's add them up."
- "Imagine some cars drove away. How many cars are left? Let's subtract the number of cars that drove away from the total number of cars."
