Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will understand the basics of government and citizenship.

Materials and Prep

  • Barbie dolls or any other dolls
  • Paper and crayons
  • Optional: Toy cars or small objects to use as props

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Role Play

Use the Barbie dolls to act out different scenarios related to government and citizenship. For example, you can have one Barbie pretend to be the mayor of a town, while another Barbie acts as a responsible citizen by following the rules and helping others. Encourage creativity and imagination!

  2. Activity 2: Draw and Discuss

Give each student a piece of paper and crayons. Ask them to draw a picture of their ideal community or city. After they finish drawing, discuss what they included in their drawings and how those elements contribute to a well-functioning community.

  3. Activity 3: Traffic Rules

If you have toy cars or small objects, set up a mini traffic scenario. Explain the importance of traffic rules and how they help keep everyone safe. Have the dolls act as drivers and pedestrians, and guide them through following the rules.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "Government is like the boss of a city or town. It helps make rules and keeps things running smoothly."
  • "Citizenship means being a good member of your community. It's important to follow rules, help others, and be responsible."
  • "Mayors are like the leaders of a city. They make decisions and help solve problems for the community."
  • "Traffic rules are important because they keep us safe. We need to follow them when we walk or drive on the road."
  • "In a community, people work together to make it a nice place to live. We can help by picking up trash, being kind to others, and taking care of our surroundings."
