Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use library skills to find and understand cooking-related books.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to a library or online library resources
  • Paper and pencil
  • Computer or tablet (optional)

Before starting the lesson, make sure you are familiar with the basic organization of a library, including the different sections and how books are arranged.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Library Skills: Start by discussing the importance of libraries and how they can help us find information. Talk about different types of books, including cookbooks, and how they can provide recipes and cooking tips.
  2. Library Scavenger Hunt: Visit a library or use online library resources to complete a scavenger hunt. Create a list of cooking-related items or topics (e.g., "Find a cookbook with dessert recipes", "Find a book about different types of fruits and vegetables"). Use the library catalog or online search tools to locate the books and write down their call numbers or titles.
  3. Book Exploration: Choose one or more cooking-related books that you found during the scavenger hunt. Spend some time flipping through the pages, looking at the pictures, and reading any interesting information. Discuss what you found and share your favorite parts.
  4. Recipe Writing: Imagine you are a chef and create your own recipe for a favorite dish. Write down the ingredients and the steps to make it. You can use your own ideas or get inspiration from the cooking books you explored earlier.
