Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the importance of bees in the environment and identify their role in pollination.

Materials and Prep

  • Printed pictures of different types of bees
  • White paper and colored pencils
  • Access to a garden or outdoor space (if available)
  • Access to a computer or tablet for online research (optional)

Activities

  1. Introduction: Show the student the printed pictures of bees and ask them what they know about bees. Discuss their ideas and clarify any misconceptions.
  2. Bee Observation: If possible, take the student to a garden or outdoor space to observe bees in action. Encourage them to watch how bees move and collect pollen from flowers. If outdoor observation is not possible, show the student videos or images of bees pollinating flowers online.
  3. Bee Drawing: Provide the student with white paper and colored pencils. Ask them to choose a bee from the printed pictures and draw it, paying attention to its physical features and colors. Encourage creativity and attention to detail.
  4. Bee Research: If access to a computer or tablet is available, guide the student to research more about bees. Help them find information about the different types of bees, their role in pollination, and the importance of bees in the environment. Discuss the findings together.
  5. Discussion: Engage the student in a conversation about why bees are important in our environment. Ask questions such as: "What would happen if bees didn't exist?" or "How do bees help plants grow?". Encourage critical thinking and provide simple explanations as needed.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "Bees are insects that help plants grow by moving pollen from one flower to another."
  • "Bees have a special body part called a 'proboscis' that they use to suck nectar from flowers."
  • "Bees collect pollen on their bodies and transfer it to other flowers, which helps the flowers make seeds and fruits."
  • "Without bees, many plants would not be able to reproduce and grow new plants."
  • "Bees also make honey, which is a sweet and sticky food they store in their hives."
  • "It's important to protect bees and their habitats to ensure a healthy environment for plants, animals, and humans."
