Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of Earth Science, specifically related to the formation and features of landforms.
Materials and Prep
- Minecraft (Gingerbread village edition)
- Computer or tablet with Minecraft installed
- Internet connection
Before starting the lesson, make sure you are familiar with the basic controls and functions of Minecraft.
Activities
- Create a Gingerbread village in Minecraft: Start by selecting a suitable location for your village. Use different blocks to build houses, roads, trees, and other elements of a village. Be creative and have fun!
- Discuss landforms: While exploring your Gingerbread village, observe the natural landforms present. Talk about hills, valleys, mountains, rivers, and lakes. Explain how these landforms are formed over time.
- Create your own landforms: Use Minecraft tools to modify the terrain and create your own landforms. Flatten areas to create plains, dig holes to make ponds, or pile blocks to form small hills. Experiment and see how different actions affect the land.
- Observe the impact of weather: Change the weather settings in Minecraft to see how it affects the landforms. Discuss how rain can cause erosion and how wind can shape the land over time.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Landforms are the different shapes we see on the Earth's surface."
- "Mountains are very tall landforms that reach high up into the sky. They are usually covered in snow at the top."
- "Rivers are long, flowing bodies of water. They start from high places, like mountains, and flow down to lower places, like the ocean or a lake."
- "Lakes are large bodies of water surrounded by land. They can be big or small and are usually not as deep as the ocean."
- "Hills are smaller landforms that are not as tall as mountains. They can be found in many places and are not usually covered in snow."
- "Weather can change the way the land looks. Rain can make the ground wet and cause rivers to get bigger. Wind can blow sand and shape the land."
- "In Minecraft, we can create our own landforms and see how they are formed."
