Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills while creating a Gingerbread village in Minecraft.
Materials and Prep
- Minecraft game
- Computer or tablet
- Gingerbread village Minecraft world (if available)
- Pen and paper
Prior knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) is required.
Activities
- Create a Gingerbread village in Minecraft using the available resources.
- Assign a value to each type of gingerbread house and candy cane.
- Add up the total value of your Gingerbread village.
- Practice arithmetic operations with your Gingerbread village.
Use your creativity and Minecraft building skills to construct a village made of gingerbread houses, candy canes, and other festive elements.
Decide on a numerical value for each type of structure in your village. For example, a gingerbread house could be worth 10 points, while a candy cane could be worth 5 points.
Count the number of each type of structure in your village and calculate the total value by multiplying the quantity of each structure by its assigned value. For instance, if you have 3 gingerbread houses (each worth 10 points) and 4 candy canes (each worth 5 points), the total value would be (3 * 10) + (4 * 5) = 50 points.
Challenge yourself by solving arithmetic problems related to your Gingerbread village. For example, if you ate 2 gingerbread houses and 3 candy canes, how many points would be subtracted from the total value?
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to use our math skills to create a Gingerbread village in Minecraft."
- "We will assign values to different structures in our village, like gingerbread houses and candy canes."
- "By counting the number of each structure and multiplying it by its value, we can find the total value of our Gingerbread village."
- "We can also practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with our Gingerbread village by solving different math problems."
