Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to solve problems related to Fortnight.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Fortnight Math Challenge

Imagine you are playing Fortnight and you need to calculate how many materials you have gathered during a game. Write down a list of 5 different materials you can collect in the game, and assign each material a numerical value (e.g. wood = 10, metal = 5, etc.). Then, create a word problem where you need to add or subtract those materials to find the total amount collected. Solve the problem and share it with a family member or friend.

  2. Activity 2: Fortnight Shopping Spree

Pretend you have won a shopping spree in Fortnight and you can buy any 3 items from the in-game store. Each item has a different price. Write down the prices of the items you want to buy and add them together to find the total cost. If you have a budget of 100 in-game dollars, determine if you can afford the items you want. If not, find alternative items that you can buy within your budget.

Fifth Grade Talking Points

  • "In Fortnight, we can use arithmetic to solve problems related to collecting materials and buying items in the game."
  • "Word problems help us apply arithmetic concepts to real-life situations. They require us to read and understand the problem, identify the relevant information, and use arithmetic operations to find the solution."
  • "Adding and subtracting numbers is essential when calculating the total amount of materials collected or the cost of items in Fortnight."
  • "Budgeting is an important skill in both real life and in games like Fortnight. By comparing the prices of different items and adding them together, we can determine if we can afford them within a given budget."
