Wonderful Wings: Let's Learn About Birds!

Materials Needed Today:

  • Pictures/Flashcards of Birds
  • Construction Paper
  • Scissors (for grown-up help!)
  • Glue Stick
  • Crayons/Markers
  • Pinecone or Cardboard Tube
  • String/Yarn
  • Shortening/Peanut Butter
  • Birdseed
  • Paper Plate
  • Bird Song Recordings (optional)

Introduction (5 mins):

"Hi there, Nature Explorer! Today we're going on an adventure to learn all about BIRDS! Have you seen any birds outside today? Birds are amazing animals with feathers that help them fly! They live all around us. Let's see what we can discover!"

Activity 1: Bird Watching (Indoors!) (10 mins):

Show the pictures/flashcards of common local birds. "Look at this bird! This is a [Bird Name]. What colors do you see?" Repeat for a few birds. Talk simply about where they might live (trees, nests). If you have bird song recordings, play a short clip. "What sound does this bird make? Tweet tweet! Chirp chirp!"

Activity 2: Make a Simple Bird Feeder (15 mins):

"Birds need food to have energy, just like us! Let's make them a snack."

  1. Tie a piece of string around the top of the pinecone or through the cardboard tube.
  2. Spread shortening or peanut butter all over the outside of the pinecone/tube (this can be messy fun!).
  3. Pour birdseed onto the paper plate.
  4. Roll the sticky pinecone/tube in the birdseed until it's covered.
  5. "Wow! Look at the yummy bird feeder we made! Let's find a place outside later to hang it on a tree branch for the birds to find."

Activity 3: Bird Habitat Picture (10 mins):

"Where do birds live? They need homes! Let's draw a place for our bird friends." Give the child construction paper, crayons, and maybe some pre-cut simple shapes (like leaves or clouds). Encourage them to draw or glue things a bird might like: a tree (green paper), the sky (blue paper), a nest (brown paper strips), maybe some yummy bugs (drawn)!

Conclusion (5 mins):

"We learned so much about birds today! We know they have feathers, sing songs, need food, and live in places like trees. Making the bird feeder helps take care of the birds in our neighborhood. Isn't it fun being a friend to the birds? Keep your eyes and ears open for birds when you go outside!"

Optional Extension: Go outside to hang the bird feeder and quietly watch to see if any birds visit over the next few days.
