Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to cooking simulations, enhancing your understanding of mathematics in a real-life context.

Materials and Prep

  • Computer or tablet with access to a cooking simulator
  • Paper and pencil for note-taking
  • Basic knowledge of arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Activities

  1. Choose a cooking simulator game or app that allows you to follow recipes and measure ingredients.

Start by selecting a simple recipe to work with, such as chocolate chip cookies.

Follow the recipe instructions and measure the required ingredients accurately.

As you measure each ingredient, write down the amount in fraction form and convert it to a decimal.

For example, if the recipe calls for 1/2 cup of flour, write it as 0.5 cups.

Repeat this process for all the ingredients in the recipe.

  2. Once you have all the ingredient measurements in decimal form, practice performing arithmetic operations with them.

Add or subtract ingredient quantities to adjust the recipe for different serving sizes.

Multiply or divide ingredient quantities to scale the recipe up or down.

For example, if the original recipe serves 4 people and you want to make it for 8 people, double the ingredient quantities using multiplication.

  3. After completing the recipe, reflect on the importance of accurate measurements and calculations in cooking.

Discuss how arithmetic skills contribute to successful cooking experiences and how they can be applied in other real-life situations.

United States of America: Grade 7 Talking Points

  • "In Grade 7, we learn about various aspects of the United States of America, including its history, geography, and government."
  • "Mathematics is a subject that helps us solve problems and make sense of the world around us. Today, we will apply arithmetic concepts to a cooking simulator, which will enhance our understanding of mathematics in a real-life context."
  • "By measuring ingredients accurately and performing arithmetic operations, we can adjust recipes for different serving sizes and scale them up or down."
  • "We will also reflect on the importance of accurate measurements and calculations in cooking, and how these skills can be applied in other real-life situations."
  • "Through this activity, we will strengthen our arithmetic skills while exploring the fun world of cooking simulations."
