Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basic principles of government and citizenship in the United States of America, while incorporating their interest in Sims.
Materials and Prep
- Computer or gaming device with Sims game installed
- Internet access
- Pen and paper for note-taking
- Printed copies of the United States Constitution (optional)
Activities
Start by playing the Sims game and creating a virtual city or community. Encourage the student to think about the different aspects of running a city, such as infrastructure, laws, and services.
Pause the game and discuss with the student the importance of government in maintaining order and providing services to its citizens. Ask questions like:
- Why do you think a city needs rules and regulations?
- What would happen if there were no laws in place?
- How does the government ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens?
Have the student research and find examples of real-life government structures and services in their local community. They can use the internet or other available resources.
Discuss the findings and ask the student to compare the virtual city in Sims to their real-life community. Encourage them to think critically about the similarities and differences between the two.
As an optional extension activity, provide the student with printed copies of the United States Constitution. Ask them to read through the Preamble and select one or two rights or responsibilities of citizens that they find interesting or important. Have a discussion about why these rights or responsibilities are significant.
