Objective

The objective of this lesson is to introduce the student to the world of visual arts and art appreciation, specifically focusing on the theme of "Seeing". By the end of the lesson, the student should have a better understanding of different art forms, techniques, and the importance of observation in art.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Any available art supplies (optional)
  • Access to the internet or art books (optional)

No prior knowledge or experience is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Seeing: Begin the lesson by discussing the importance of observation in art. Talk about how artists use their eyes to see and interpret the world around them. Encourage the student to think about what they see in their daily lives and how it can be represented in art.
  2. Blind Contour Drawing: Explain the concept of blind contour drawing, where the artist draws an object without looking at the paper. Demonstrate the technique by choosing a simple object and drawing it on a piece of paper without looking down. Then, have the student choose an object and try blind contour drawing themselves. Emphasize the process over the outcome, as the purpose is to practice observation skills.
  3. Still Life Drawing: Set up a simple still life arrangement with objects such as fruits, flowers, or everyday items. Instruct the student to observe the objects carefully and create a detailed drawing of the still life. Encourage them to pay attention to shapes, shadows, and textures.
  4. Exploring Art Online: If internet access is available, guide the student to explore online art galleries or websites that showcase different art forms. Encourage them to choose a piece of artwork that resonates with them and write a short reflection on why they find it interesting.
  5. Art Appreciation Discussion: Engage in a conversation about the student's artwork and the chosen artwork from the online exploration. Discuss the techniques used, the emotions evoked, and any personal interpretations. Encourage the student to express their thoughts and opinions confidently.
