Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and read a set of sight words.

Materials and Prep

  • A list of sight words (e.g., "the", "and", "is", "it", "can", "see")
  • Flashcards or printed words of the sight words

Activities

  1. Introduction to Sight Words

Show the list of sight words to the student and explain that these are words that appear frequently in books and texts. Emphasize that recognizing these words quickly will make reading easier and more enjoyable.

  2. Word Recognition Practice

Use flashcards or printed words to practice recognizing sight words. Show each word to the student and ask them to say the word out loud. Repeat this activity multiple times, gradually increasing the speed at which the words are shown.

  3. Word Sorting Game

Prepare two buckets or containers labeled "Sight Words" and "Not Sight Words". Create a stack of flashcards or printed words, including a mix of sight words and non-sight words. Show each word to the student and ask them to place it in the correct bucket based on whether it is a sight word or not. Repeat this activity until all the words have been sorted.

  4. Reading Sentences

Create simple sentences using the sight words learned in this lesson. Show each sentence to the student and ask them to read it out loud. Encourage them to use their finger to point to each word as they read.
