Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Grade 1 student will be able to identify and read sight words with confidence.

Materials and Prep

  • Flashcards or sight word list
  • Whiteboard or chalkboard
  • Dry erase markers or chalk

Activities

  1. Introduction to Sight Words

Start by explaining to the student what sight words are - words that are frequently used and should be recognized instantly without needing to decode them. Show them flashcards or a list of sight words, and ask them to repeat each word after you.

  2. Word Recognition Practice

Write a few sight words on the whiteboard or chalkboard. Have the student read each word aloud, and then erase the word. Repeat this activity with different sight words until the student feels comfortable recognizing and reading them.

  3. Word Building Game

Using the flashcards or sight word list, shuffle the cards and place them face down. Take turns with the student to pick a card and read the word. If the student reads the word correctly, they keep the card. If they make a mistake, the card goes back into the pile. The player with the most cards at the end wins!
