Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name the different parts of a plant.

Materials and Prep

  • Picture cards of different parts of a plant (root, stem, leaf, flower)
  • Chart paper and markers
  • Scissors and glue
  • Construction paper

Activities

  1. Introduction: Show the picture cards of the different parts of a plant to the student. Discuss each part and ask the student to repeat the names.
  2. Sorting Activity: Cut out pictures of different plants from magazines or draw them. Ask the student to identify the different parts of the plant in each picture and sort them into categories (root, stem, leaf, flower).
  3. Art Activity: Provide the student with construction paper, scissors, and glue. Ask them to create a collage by cutting out pictures of plants and arranging them according to the different parts.
  4. Review: Use the chart paper and markers to create a visual representation of a plant. Write the names of the different parts and ask the student to point to each part and say its name.

United States of America: Pre-Kindergarten Talking Points

  • Root: Roots help plants stay in the ground and absorb water and nutrients. They are like the plant's feet.
  • Stem: The stem holds up the plant and helps transport water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves. It is like the plant's backbone.
  • Leaf: Leaves make food for the plant through a process called photosynthesis. They are like the plant's kitchen.
  • Flower: Flowers attract insects and birds for pollination. They can also turn into fruits or seeds. They are like the plant's colorful dress.
