Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Grade 2 homeschool student will be able to understand the concept of parody and apply it creatively in their writing.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencils
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)
  • Examples of parodies from books, movies, or songs (optional)

Activities

  1. Introduction to Parody:

Begin by explaining what parody means. Use simple language appropriate for Grade 2 students. You can say:

"Parody is a way of imitating or making fun of something by changing it slightly. It's like making a funny version of a story or a song. Parodies often use humor to entertain people."

Give a few examples of parodies from popular culture, such as funny versions of popular songs or movies, to help the student understand the concept better.

  2. Create a Parody:

Ask the student to think of a familiar story, fairy tale, or nursery rhyme that they would like to parody. Encourage them to choose something they enjoy or are familiar with. For example, they could choose "Little Red Riding Hood" or "Humpty Dumpty."

Guide the student to brainstorm ways they can change the story to make it funny. They can change the characters, the setting, or the events in the story. Help them come up with creative and silly ideas.

Once they have a few ideas, ask them to write their parody version of the story. Remind them to use their imagination and have fun with it.

  3. Share and Perform:

After the student has finished writing their parody, ask them to share it with you or other family members. Encourage them to perform it as a mini skit or read it aloud with funny voices.

Applaud their creativity and sense of humor, and discuss what they enjoyed about creating a parody.
