Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Grade 1 homeschool student will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts using Magnatile as a manipulative tool.

Materials and Prep

  • Magnatile set
  • Pen and paper
  • Basic understanding of addition and subtraction

Activities

  1. Introduction to Magnatile:

    • Show the student the Magnatile set and explain that it can be used to represent numbers and perform basic math operations.
    • Demonstrate how to build numbers using the Magnatile pieces and explain that each piece represents a specific value.
    • Practice building numbers together and encourage the student to explore different combinations.
  2. Addition with Magnatile:

    • Start with a simple addition problem, such as 2 + 3.
    • Ask the student to build the numbers using Magnatile pieces and then combine them to find the sum.
    • Repeat with a few more addition problems, gradually increasing the difficulty.
  3. Subtraction with Magnatile:

    • Choose a subtraction problem, such as 5 - 2.
    • Have the student build the starting number using Magnatile pieces and then remove the specified amount to find the difference.
    • Continue practicing subtraction with different problems, reinforcing the concept of "taking away" using Magnatile.
  4. Word Problems with Magnatile:

    • Create simple word problems involving addition and subtraction.
    • Have the student use Magnatile to represent the numbers and solve the problems.
    • Encourage the student to explain their thinking and reasoning behind their solutions.

United States of America: Grade 1 Talking Points

  • "In Grade 1, we learn about basic arithmetic, which includes addition and subtraction."
  • "Today, we will be using Magnatile to help us understand and practice arithmetic."
  • "Magnatile is a great tool because it allows us to visually represent numbers and perform math operations."
  • "We will start by building numbers using Magnatile and then move on to addition and subtraction."
  • "Remember, addition means combining numbers to find the total, while subtraction means taking away a certain amount from a number."
  • "We will also solve word problems using Magnatile, where we will need to read and understand the problem before finding the solution."
  • "Let's have fun exploring math with Magnatile today!"
