Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Pre-Kindergarten student will be able to explore and create with blocks while learning about the United States of America.

Materials and Prep

  • Blocks of different shapes and sizes
  • United States map (can be a printed image)
  • Printed images of famous landmarks in the United States (e.g., Statue of Liberty, Golden Gate Bridge, Mount Rushmore)
  • Printed images of American flags
  • Printed images of different types of homes in the United States (e.g., log cabins, skyscrapers, suburban houses)

No specific prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduction to the United States: Show the student the United States map and briefly explain that it is a country made up of different states. Point out the location of the student's home state if applicable.
  2. Building Landmarks: Show the student the printed images of famous landmarks in the United States. Encourage them to use the blocks to build their own versions of these landmarks. Talk about each landmark as they build, mentioning its name and its significance.
  3. Flag Creations: Show the student the printed images of American flags. Discuss the colors and symbols on the flag, such as the stars and stripes. Encourage the student to use the blocks to create their own flag designs.
  4. Home Construction: Show the student the printed images of different types of homes in the United States. Talk about the different styles and materials used in building homes. Have the student use the blocks to construct their own houses or buildings.
