Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Grade 6 homeschool student will be able to write a persuasive essay about the benefits of pet sitting.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pens or pencils
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)

Prior knowledge required: Basic understanding of essay structure and persuasive writing techniques.

Activities

  1. Brainstorming: Have the student brainstorm a list of reasons why pet sitting can be a rewarding and beneficial experience. Encourage them to think about the positive impact on both the pets and the pet sitter.

  2. Research: If access to a computer or tablet is available, instruct the student to conduct some research on the topic of pet sitting. They can look for personal stories, statistics, or any other relevant information that can support their persuasive essay.

  3. Outline: Guide the student in creating an outline for their essay. Help them organize their thoughts and arguments into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

  4. Drafting: Have the student write a rough draft of their persuasive essay. Encourage them to use their outline as a guide and incorporate the information they gathered during the research phase.

  5. Revision: Instruct the student to revise their essay for clarity, coherence, and persuasive language. Encourage them to seek feedback from a parent or guardian, if possible.

  6. Final Draft: Once the revisions are complete, have the student write a final draft of their persuasive essay. Remind them to pay attention to grammar, spelling, and overall presentation.
