Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Grade 1 student will be able to improve their reading skills while engaging with their interest in Minecraft.
Materials and Prep
- A computer or tablet with internet access
- Access to Minecraft
- Printed Minecraft-themed reading passages (can be found online or created by the teacher)
- Pencil and paper
Activities
-
Introduce the concept of reading comprehension to the student by explaining that they will be reading passages related to Minecraft and answering questions about them.
-
Provide the student with a Minecraft-themed reading passage and ask them to read it aloud. Encourage them to take their time and sound out any unfamiliar words.
-
After reading the passage, ask the student a series of comprehension questions to assess their understanding. For example:
- What was the main idea of the passage?
- Who were the characters mentioned in the passage?
- What happened at the beginning/middle/end of the story?
-
Have the student write a short summary of the passage in their own words. Encourage them to use proper sentence structure and include important details.
-
Repeat steps 2-4 with additional Minecraft-themed reading passages, gradually increasing the complexity of the texts as the student progresses.

- "Just like Minecraft has different characters and creatures, the United States is home to people from different backgrounds and cultures."
