Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic concepts of geography and apply them to the topic of the Titanic.
Materials and Prep
- World map or globe
- Pictures or illustrations of the Titanic
- Blank paper and coloring materials
- Printed Titanic coloring pages (optional)
Activities
- Introduction: Begin by showing the student pictures or illustrations of the Titanic. Ask them if they know what the Titanic is and if they have heard any stories about it.
- Locating the United States: Use the world map or globe to help the student locate the United States. Explain that the Titanic was a ship that sailed from the United Kingdom to the United States.
- Mapping the Route: Show the student the route the Titanic took from Southampton, England to New York City, USA. Trace the route on the map or globe and discuss the different bodies of water the ship crossed.
- Coloring Activity: Provide the student with blank paper and coloring materials. Ask them to draw or color a picture of the Titanic sailing on the ocean.
- Titanic Facts: Share interesting facts about the Titanic with the student. For example:
- "The Titanic was a very big ship. It was as long as three football fields!"
- "The Titanic hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean and sank."
- "Many people on the Titanic were trying to go to the United States to start a new life."
