Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Grade 2 homeschool student will be able to identify and analyze various fairy tales, understand the elements of a fairy tale, and make connections between fairy tales and their own lives.

Materials and Prep

  • A collection of fairy tale books
  • Pen and paper for taking notes
  • A comfortable reading area

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of fairy tales by discussing what the student already knows about them. Ask questions like: "What is a fairy tale?" and "Can you name any fairy tales you have heard or read before?" Encourage the student to share their thoughts and experiences.
  2. Read a classic fairy tale together, such as "Cinderella" or "Little Red Riding Hood." While reading, pause at key moments to ask comprehension questions and engage in discussions about the characters, plot, and moral lessons of the story.
  3. After reading the fairy tale, have the student write or draw their favorite part of the story and explain why they enjoyed it. This activity encourages creativity and critical thinking.
  4. Explore different versions of the same fairy tale. Provide the student with multiple books or online resources that offer different interpretations of a well-known fairy tale. Discuss the similarities and differences between the versions, and ask the student which version they prefer and why.
  5. Encourage the student to create their own fairy tale. Provide them with a prompt or a starting point, such as "Write a fairy tale about a magical creature who helps someone in need." Allow the student to use their imagination and creativity to develop their own unique story.
