Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts, such as addition and subtraction, in a fun and engaging way.

Materials and Prep

  • Blaze and The Monster Machines toys or pictures
  • Sonic toys or pictures
  • Baby Shark song or video
  • Counting cards or number flashcards
  • Paper and crayons

Activities

  1. Start by introducing the concept of addition using the Blaze and The Monster Machines toys or pictures. Ask the student to count the number of toys or pictures and then add more toys or pictures to the group. Encourage them to count the total number of items and say the sum out loud.

  2. Next, move on to subtraction using the Sonic toys or pictures. Have the student count the number of toys or pictures and then remove some from the group. Ask them to count the remaining items and say the difference out loud.

  3. Take a break from the toys and introduce the Baby Shark song or video. Sing along with the student and encourage them to follow the counting sequence in the song. Use the counting cards or number flashcards to reinforce the concept of counting.

  4. Finally, give the student a piece of paper and crayons. Ask them to draw their favorite character from Blaze and The Monster Machines, Sonic, or Baby Shark. Then, have them write a simple addition or subtraction equation related to the number of characters they drew. For example, if they drew three Sonic characters, they can write 3 + 1 = 4 or 4 - 1 = 3.
