Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts such as counting, addition, and subtraction.

Materials and Prep

  • Blaze and The Monster Machines toys or pictures
  • Sonic toys or pictures
  • Baby Shark song or video
  • Counting cards or objects
  • Paper and crayons

Activities

  • Activity 1: Counting with Blaze and The Monster Machines
  • Show the student Blaze and The Monster Machines toys or pictures. Ask them to count how many they see. Encourage them to use their fingers or counting cards to help them.

  • Activity 2: Adding with Sonic
  • Show the student Sonic toys or pictures. Start with a small number of Sonics and ask the student to add more by counting. For example, ask them to add 2 Sonics to the 3 they already have. Help them count the total.

  • Activity 3: Subtraction with Baby Shark
  • Play the Baby Shark song or video. Ask the student to pretend they have a certain number of sharks and then take away some. For example, ask them to start with 5 sharks and take away 2. Help them count how many are left.

  • Activity 4: Drawing and Counting
  • Give the student paper and crayons. Ask them to draw their favorite character from Blaze and The Monster Machines, Sonic, or Baby Shark. Then, ask them to count how many colors they used to color their drawing.
