Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and spell basic words using Montessori-inspired activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Montessori movable alphabet (can be made at home using cardboard or other materials)
  • Whiteboard or chalkboard
  • Whiteboard marker or chalk
  • Small objects or pictures of objects (e.g., cat, dog, ball, etc.)

Activities

  • Matching Game: Place a few small objects or pictures on a tray. Ask the student to spell the name of each object using the movable alphabet.
  • Word Hunt: Write simple words on the whiteboard or chalkboard. Have the student find the corresponding letters from the movable alphabet and place them under each word.
  • Sensory Spelling: Fill a shallow tray or container with sand, rice, or salt. Encourage the student to use their finger to write words from memory or copy words you write for them.
  • Outdoor Scavenger Hunt: Take a walk outside and look for objects with simple names (e.g., tree, flower, etc.). Have the student spell the words using natural materials like sticks, leaves, or rocks.

Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to have fun learning how to spell words using the Montessori movable alphabet."
  • "The movable alphabet is a special tool that helps us practice spelling. It has different letters that we can move around to make words."
  • "In our matching game, we will look at objects or pictures and try to spell their names using the movable alphabet. For example, if we see a picture of a cat, we can use the letters C-A-T to spell cat."
  • "In the word hunt activity, we will have words written on the board. We will use the movable alphabet to find the letters and place them under each word. This will help us practice spelling and matching letters to their sounds."
  • "For sensory spelling, we will use materials like sand, rice, or salt. We can write words in the sensory material using our finger. It feels different and fun!"
  • "During our outdoor scavenger hunt, we will go outside and look for objects with simple names. We will spell the words using natural materials like sticks, leaves, or rocks. Nature can be our spelling playground!"
