Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition and subtraction.
Materials and Prep
- Number cards (0-9)
- Counting objects (e.g., buttons, beans, or blocks)
- Whiteboard or large paper
- Markers or crayons
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson. We will start from the basics.
Activities
-
Counting and Matching:
Ask the student to count the number of objects (e.g., buttons) and then match it with the corresponding number card.
-
Addition with Objects:
Place a certain number of objects in front of the student. Ask them to count and then add more objects to find the total. Use the number cards to represent the addition equation.
-
Subtraction with Objects:
Start with a set number of objects. Ask the student to count and then remove some objects to find the difference. Use the number cards to represent the subtraction equation.
-
Writing Numbers:
Practice writing numbers on the whiteboard or large paper using markers or crayons. Encourage the student to trace the numbers first and then try writing them independently.
Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to learn about numbers and how to add and subtract them."
- "Numbers help us count and keep track of things. They are like little friends we can play with."
- "When we count objects, we can match them with number cards to see how many there are."
- "Adding means putting things together. We can add objects by counting them one by one."
- "Subtracting means taking things away. We can subtract objects by removing them and counting what's left."
- "Let's practice writing numbers. We can start by tracing them and then try writing them on our own."
