Objective

By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to ride a scooter independently while practicing balance and coordination skills.

Materials and Prep

  • A toddler-sized scooter
  • A safe and open area to ride (such as a driveway or backyard)
  • A helmet for safety
  • Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes
  • Make sure the scooter is in good working condition

Activities

  1. Warm-up exercises:

Start the lesson with a few simple warm-up exercises to get the body ready for physical activity. This can include jumping jacks, stretching, and jogging in place.

  2. Introduction to the scooter:

Show the toddler the scooter and explain its parts, such as the handlebars, wheels, and footboard. Demonstrate how to properly stand on the scooter and hold onto the handlebars for balance.

  3. Practice pushing off:

Have the toddler practice pushing off with one foot while keeping the other foot on the ground. Encourage them to maintain their balance and take small steps to start with.

  4. Balance and steering practice:

Once the toddler is comfortable with pushing off, encourage them to lift both feet and balance on the scooter. Teach them how to steer by leaning and shifting their body weight.

  5. Obstacle course:

Create a simple obstacle course using cones, toys, or other objects. Have the toddler navigate through the course while riding the scooter, practicing their balance and coordination skills.

  6. Cool-down and reflection:

Finish the lesson with a cool-down period, where the toddler can stretch and relax their muscles. Take a moment to reflect on their progress and celebrate their achievements.
