Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts through fun activities related to ducks.

Materials and Prep

  • Toy ducks (at least 10)
  • A small container or bucket
  • Number cards (0-9)
  • Counting objects (e.g. small pebbles, buttons)
  • Pen and paper for recording

Activities

  1. Duck Counting: Place the toy ducks in a row and ask the student to count them out loud. Encourage them to touch each duck as they count.

  2. Duck Sorting: Ask the student to sort the ducks based on their color, size, or shape. For example, they can put all the yellow ducks together or all the big ducks together.

  3. Duck Addition: Show the student two number cards (e.g. 2 and 3). Ask them to place the corresponding number of ducks in the container and count how many ducks there are in total.

  4. Duck Subtraction: Show the student a number card (e.g. 4) and ask them to place that number of ducks in the container. Then, ask them to take away a certain number of ducks and count how many ducks are left.

  5. Duck Patterns: Create a simple pattern using different colored ducks (e.g. yellow, yellow, green, yellow, yellow, green). Ask the student to continue the pattern by placing the correct ducks in the sequence.

Talking Points

  • "Ducks are fun animals that we can use to learn math!"

  • "Let's count the ducks together. Can you say the numbers out loud?"

  • "Can you find all the yellow ducks and put them in one group?"

  • "If we have 2 ducks and add 3 more, how many ducks do we have in total?"

  • "Now, let's take away 1 duck from the group. How many ducks are left?"

  • "Look at the pattern I made with the ducks. Can you continue the pattern by adding the right colored ducks?"
