Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to perform basic arithmetic operations using numbers within Minecraft.
Materials and Prep
- A computer or tablet with access to Minecraft
- A notebook or paper for taking notes
- Pencil or pen
No prior knowledge of Minecraft is required, but basic familiarity with the game is beneficial.
Activities
Activity 1: Counting Blocks
In Minecraft, explore a world and count the number of blocks you come across. Keep a tally of different types of blocks (e.g., grass, stone, wood). Write down the total count for each block type.
Activity 2: Addition and Subtraction
Create a simple structure in Minecraft using blocks. Ask the student to add or subtract a specific number of blocks from the structure. For example, "If I have 7 stone blocks and I add 3 more, how many blocks do I have in total?" or "If I have 10 wood blocks and I remove 4, how many blocks are left?"
Activity 3: Multiplication and Division
Using Minecraft blocks, create groups of blocks and ask the student to determine the total number of blocks in each group. For example, "If I have 4 groups of 5 grass blocks, how many grass blocks do I have in total?" or "If I have 12 wood blocks and I want to distribute them equally among 3 players, how many blocks will each player receive?"
Talking Points
"In Minecraft, we can use numbers to do math just like we do in real life."
"Counting blocks in Minecraft helps us practice our counting skills."
"When we add blocks, we combine them to find the total number."
"When we subtract blocks, we take away some from the total."
"Multiplication helps us find the total number of blocks in groups or repeated sets."
"Division helps us share blocks equally among a certain number of players or groups."
"Remember to write down your calculations or use mental math to find the answers."
