Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencils or markers
  • Any art supplies you have available (optional)
  • Access to the internet or art books (optional)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required.

Activities

  • Activity 1: What is Art?
Start by discussing with your student what they think art is. Have them share their thoughts and ideas. Then, together, create a definition of art based on their input. Write down the definition on a piece of paper and decorate it with drawings or colors.
  • Activity 2: Art Exploration
Show your student different forms of art, such as paintings, sculptures, photographs, and even performance art. Discuss each form and ask your student what they like or dislike about them. Encourage them to express their opinions and ask questions.
  • Activity 3: Create Your Own Art
Provide your student with paper and pencils or markers. Let them choose a form of art they would like to try. It could be drawing, painting, or even making a sculpture out of clay if you have it available. Allow them to experiment and be creative. Remind them that there are no right or wrong answers in art.

Talking Points

  • Art is a way of expressing yourself. It can be a painting, a sculpture, a photograph, or even a performance. It allows us to communicate our thoughts, feelings, and ideas.
  • Art can be found everywhere. Look around you, and you'll see art in nature, in buildings, and even in everyday objects. Artists can find inspiration in the world around them.
  • Art is subjective. Different people may have different opinions about a piece of art. What one person loves, another person may not like as much. It's okay to have different preferences.
  • Art can tell stories. Sometimes, artists use their art to tell stories or convey messages. They may use symbols, colors, or specific techniques to communicate their ideas.
  • Art can be created using various techniques and materials. Some artists use paint and brushes, while others use pencils, markers, or even digital tools. There are no strict rules in art, and artists can experiment with different mediums.
  • Art can evoke emotions. Looking at a piece of art can make us feel happy, sad, excited, or even confused. It's normal to have different emotional reactions to different artworks.
