- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Paints and brushes
- Water container
- Smock or old clothes to protect from paint
- A comfortable chair for the piano
No prior knowledge or experience is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Piano Playtime: Let the student explore the piano or keyboard by pressing different keys and listening to the sounds they produce. Encourage them to experiment with high and low notes.
- Music and Movement: Play a lively tune on the piano and encourage the student to dance or move around to the rhythm. This activity helps develop their sense of rhythm and coordination.
- Colorful Melodies: Ask the student to choose a favorite color. Then, using crayons, markers, or colored pencils, have them draw lines or shapes on a piece of paper while listening to a piece of music. Encourage them to let the music inspire their artwork.
- Piano Painting: Dip a paintbrush in water and gently tap it on the piano keys to create different sounds. Show the student how the piano can be used as a unique instrument to make music. Then, using paints and brushes, let the student create a painting while listening to their favorite piano piece.
Talking Points
- Playing the piano is like making music with your fingers. When you press the keys, you create beautiful sounds.
- Music can make us feel happy, excited, or calm. It can also make us want to dance or move our bodies.
- Colors can be like music too. They can make us feel different emotions. What color makes you feel happy? What color makes you feel calm?
- The piano can make different sounds depending on how we touch the keys. Some sounds are high, like a bird chirping, and some are low, like a big drum.
- When we paint while listening to music, we can let the music guide our brushstrokes and create a unique artwork.
