Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts using Magnatiles.

Materials and Prep

  • Magnatiles set
  • Paper and pencil

Activities

  1. Counting with Magnatiles

Have the student count the number of Magnatiles in different colors or shapes. Ask questions like "How many red Magnatiles do you see?" or "How many triangles are there?"

  2. Addition with Magnatiles

Show the student two groups of Magnatiles and ask them to combine the groups. For example, show 3 red Magnatiles and 2 blue Magnatiles, and ask "How many Magnatiles are there in total?" Let the student use the Magnatiles to physically add them together.

  3. Subtraction with Magnatiles

Show the student a group of Magnatiles and ask them to remove a certain number of Magnatiles. For example, show 5 yellow Magnatiles and ask "If we take away 2 Magnatiles, how many will be left?" Let the student physically remove the Magnatiles to find the answer.

Talking Points

  • "Mathematics is all about numbers and counting. Today, we will use Magnatiles to explore different math concepts."

  • "Let's start by counting the Magnatiles. Count along with me: 1, 2, 3, ..."

  • "Now, let's practice addition. If we have 2 red Magnatiles and 3 blue Magnatiles, how many Magnatiles do we have in total? Let's use the Magnatiles to add them together."

  • "Great job! Now, let's try subtraction. If we have 5 yellow Magnatiles and we take away 2, how many will be left? Use the Magnatiles to physically remove them."

  • "Remember, in math, we can use objects like Magnatiles to help us understand and solve problems."

  • "Keep practicing with the Magnatiles, and soon you'll become a math expert!"
